Enrique Lorenzo was born in Camaguey, Cuba, and spent his formative years in Havana, where the life, rhythms and diverse cultures of the city captivated him.

At an early age, he developed a strong interest in the visual arts and was encouraged by his teachers and family to apply for admission to the San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts (Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes “San Alejandro”), the oldest and most prestigious fine arts school in Cuba. During his six years of training at San Alejandro, Mr. Lorenzo studied drawing and painting under several renowned Cuban masters, including Enrique Crucet, Esteban Valderrama and Silvia Fernandez Arrojo.

In 1968, Mr. Lorenzo emigrated from Cuba to Spain and then New York City. He currently resides with his wife, Virginia, in New York City’s Greenwich Village.

Mr. Lorenzo’s drawings and paintings reflect his expressionist leanings, and have been influenced by the Spanish masters, particularly Francisco Goya, as well as the masters of the Italian Renaissance and the Dutch and Flemish schools. His use of shadow and chiaroscuro reflect the inner lives of his figures, who are often haunted by truths about the human condition which artists and philosophers have pondered throughout the ages.
